Nez Perce Forest

august 2

WEATHER: 99 degree high. It was time to go back to the real world. Three days is the longest I have ever gone without civilization, and with the heat it became a quest, like I was in a fever dream. We loved every minute of it, but it was very hard to take that heat.

Our last morning…

We hit the trail early, but it was already fucking HOT.

There are 3 campsites at the trailhead, so we just set up camp there for the night. We thought it would be cooler because we had the shade of the thick forest, but it wasn’t. It was even hotter, even at nightfall. It was gorgeous there, though. So lush! And no other campers, so we were alone for one more night :) It just doesn’t feel like it when you have a car nearby.

We had this amazing little cove below the site, completely shaded, that was reasonably comfortable to sit in for a couple of hours. Two awesome trees holding up an enormous boulder. The views of the river couldn’t be beat. But still, the heat puts your brain on pause and all you want to do is lay around. Booo.

I have never in my life camped wearing a tank top. Or sandals. But the temps are too damn high. Weirdly, I didn’t see any mosquitos. I got bit by a yellow jacket and an ant, Aaron by a horsefly. But neither of us got mosquito bites. Yay!

What a sunset! Didn’t really cool things off, but it was exciting!
